Holiday House Decorating
Decorating the outside of your house for the holidays can be just as fun as decorating the inside. Use lights, garland, ornaments and figurines to decorate for Christmas, Hanukkah and any other holiday. |
Outside: |
Hang white or colored lights around frame of house, across overhangs and window sills. The more lights, the prettier the decoration!
Homemade wreaths are a simple craft to make this holiday season. Buy a real or fake wreath and for decoration, hot-glue bows, berries, pinecones and any other holiday accessory you might think of! Hang your wreath on the outside of your door for the enjoyment of all of your visitors. For a consistent look, decorate many holiday wreaths in the same fashion, and hang one on the outside of every window and door in your house.
Wrap fake green garland around tree trunks and stair railings, and add white or colored lights around the garland to make this holiday scene complete.
Take an empty shirt box and place a rock or something heavy in it so that it won't blow away and wrap as a holiday gift. Use holiday wrap, ribbons and bows to decorate your gifts and place under bushes, on steps or pile in a corner of the lawn.
Place a mini Santa on your staircase or in a sled on your lawn. Place gifts and toys all around him.
Make your window boxes or flower boxes festive for the holidays by decorating them with fresh greens, holly and bows. For a FUN look, fill your window boxes with boxes of assorted shapes and sizes, gift wrapped to make them appear as though they are filled with gifts! |
Purchase an inexpensive mail box to create a great holiday craft. Spray paint it red, green, silver or blue. Use craft paints to add simple holiday shapes or attach ornaments with a hot glue gun. Add glitter and any holiday accessories that can withstand the weather. Use in place of your current mailbox for the holiday season! |
Hang candy canes in the trees and bushes around your house. Fake or real canes will do. Make sure they are up high enough so animals do not try to eat them.
Line your driveway or walkway with luminary lights. This creates a soft light that will reflect on all of your decorations.
Hang plastic icicles from your porches and roof tops. This fake ice will look like the real thing. Be careful to tape down the electrical cord to avoid accidents!
For outdoor parties, light large, holiday-shaped candles and float them in the center of your pool. Attach bows about 5 feet apart to the outside of the pool railing and drape lights connecting to each.
If you live in a location that does not get much snow during the holidays, create a snowy effect by sprinkling fake snow over bushes, trees and lawn. Hang paper snowballs from your porch, windowsills and roof overhangs.
Inside: |
Decorate a mini tree or buy one that is already decorated. Place on stairs, in corners of your house or use as a centerpiece.
Hang mistletoe from every doorway entrance.
Hang non-flammable ornaments from lamps and chandeliers.
Make bows from Christmas ribbon and pin them to your curtains or use as tie backs.
Use non toxic paint to decorate a white tablecloth for the holiday dinner. Use non toxic glue to adhere flat ornaments, shapes cut from construction paper and bows.
Dress up your house plants - hang small Christmas ornaments and bows on them. String lights to complete the house plant tree!
Pile a collection of Christmas books on a side table for a subtle decoration.
Wrap green garland and indoor Christmas lights around a railing or banister. Secure with tape. Be careful to tape down the electrical cord so that no one trips over it.
Wrap an assortment of medium to large sized boxes with Christmas wrap. Attach ribbons and/or bows. Pile the boxes in a corner from floor to ceiling or under house plants.
Wrap your doors in Christmas wrapping paper and attach large bows.
Replace your fish tank background mural with a piece of Christmas wrapping paper. Even the fish will be festive!
Display colored glass ball ornaments or even beads in a bowl instead of hanging them on your tree. Use as centerpiece with a candle or cinnamon sticks.
Use small bells and tie each to 3 pieces of ribbon between 6" and 18" in length. Gather all of the ribbons together and knot together at the top. Drape the bells over a door knob so that they ring when someone enters or exits.
Place pillar candles in all sizes on mantelpiece and drape garland, holly and pinecones all around. This makes a cozy display for those winter nights.
Place light up menorahs on the dinner table for a centerpiece.
